  • The IRS needs to know your current mailing address. If you received pre-printed address labels with a packet from the IRS, legibly correct the label with your new address information, or write your new address in the proper spaces on IRS forms. The IRS will update its files with your new address.

    You may also use IRS Form 8822 to update your address. You'll fill out the following information:
    1. Your full name
    2. Your old and new addresses
    3. Your social security number or employer identification number
    4. The type of return(s) affected by the change — individual income; gift, estate or generation transfer; or business
    5. Your signature

    Make sure the post office that serviced your former address has your new address as well. Ask if they will forward your refund — not all post offices will forward government checks.
